HISTORY
The Norton family’s history in construction dates to the early 1930’s. In an effort to makes ends meet during the Great Depression, D.O. Norton relocated his family from the Tonto Valley south of Payson, Arizona to Phoenix. After a period working as a carpenter for other contractors, including Del Webb, D.O. began building single family housing on his own and eventually entered the commercial and institutional markets statewide. During summer vacations Delbert, who was born in Payson in 1922, worked for his father. Upon graduating from Phoenix Union High School, Delbert went to work full-time. After serving in the Signal Corps Service in the South Pacific during World War II, Delbert returned to Arizona in 1947and became a partner in his father's business. In the years to follow, D.O. Norton & Son expanded in volume and diversity and constructed major schools, hospitals, and commercial projects in virtually every corner of the state. In May of 1961, Delbert founded Norton-Connor Contractors, Inc. with another D.O. Norton veteran, Frank Connor. The company continued the family tradition of working in remote areas of Arizona and specializing in institutional and commercial buildings.
A slowing economy and increased competition in the early 1970’s led to diversification. It was during this period that Norton-Connor added public works and engineering construction to its services. The majority of these new projects included parks and recreation facilities and wastewater and water treatment plants.
In 1975, Frank Connor left the company and the name was changed to D. L. Norton General Contracting, Inc. In 1980, Delbert Norton’s three sons, who had all been employed by the company since the early 70’s, were named officers of the corporation and began to assume responsibility for day to day operations. While continuing to work on a diverse assortment of building and engineering projects, the company continued to adapt and diversify with the addition of historic restoration and alternative delivery methods to its portfolio. Today, a third generation of Nortons and an experienced team of seasoned construction veterans continue to reinforce this tradition of diversity and complexity. More importantly, they are dedicated to creating long term relationships based on integrity, commitment to costumer service, and quality workmanship. |
